According to Diogenes, "The richest man is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least". Unhappiness comes when you need more than you need. This is my definition of poverty. 

The normative pressures of society tend to exacerbate that. His full name was "Diogenes the Cynic," and it was he who searched for "an honest man."

He was fearless, when Alexander the Great asked whether there was anything he could do for him, Diogenes replied, “Yes, get out of my light!”

After which Alexander said, "There are only 2 men in the world that are free. Me and Diogenes." I paraphrased that because I'm too lazy to look up the exact quote.
